Hardcover. Condition: Fair. Hardcover. Blue cloth over boards with leather spine. Gold lettering on brown title plate on spine. Title page dated 1846, no separate copyright page. 186 pages. In fair condition. Considerable rubbing to cloth and spine, with corners of boards exposed through split cloth. Leather is cracked along the entire length of both hinges and horizontally towards head of spine. Leather is very worn, though lettering on title plate remains bright and clear. Textblock remains firmly bound. Prominent foxing on all pages of textblock. Lower right corner of first half of pages have stain from water damage. Additional water damage on front endpaper, which is also split along the gutter. Personal library book plate on flyleaf before title page, this page is no longer attached to binding. Name written in fading ink along top edge of title page. A couple pages creased in the corner as if they had been dog-eared at one point. Print remains bold and crisp- in good reading condition. Does not appear to be missing any pages. Overall worn, though sturdy and readable.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Issued Without Dustjacket. The book is bound in half black crushed goat leather with black book cloth. The front leather hinge is cracked ,but the hinge itself is strong. There are some scattered minor scuff marks, and mild bumping of some corners. The gilding is quite good. The marbled end papers are very attractive. Mild foxing of the text block. There are three illustrations. No map. A table of distances traveled.

The previous owner's name is written on the front free end paper. Scattered mild foxing. There are 22 illustrations, two complete maps (Beer Springs and Great Salt Lake) in the text, and two text foldout maps that are only 1/2 present(Bear River and Rio de losAmericanos). The Large foldout map is absent. There are large sections on Astronomical Observations, Meteorological Observations, Distances Traveled, and A Catalogue of Plants. This book has about every fact you need to know about these explorations. The senate report.

The folding map at page 132 is present and complete, but has fully separated along 2 folds. The folding map at page 246 is complete and intact. 1/2 of the scarce large folding map at the rear is present, but the other half is missing; the present half has separated along most of the folds (see attached images). The sleeve for the map is present, but has detached from the rear board. Both boards are detached, but present. The front fly through page 16 are detached from the text block, but are present; they remain delicately attached to the front board. The boards are quite edgeworn, and with some surface wear. The backstrip is missing. The endpapers are foxed, and the text block is age-darkened. This was an Ex-Library copy; the only markings being a library bookplate on the front pastedown, stamps on the title page, title page verso, and reader-notice page, and a library label on the inside of the rear board. No library markings noted on the maps or prints. The book appears complete. The second small folding map (untitled map showing the crossing of the Sierra Nevada by the South Fork of the American River) is supplied in photo-facsimile. Some of the plates are trimmed quite close to the margins. In a later nineteenth century binding of three-quarter navy blue leather over patterened paper-covered boards. Fremont's most important work, chronicling his seminal expeditions that revealed the paths and trails that would become the highways over which the gold seekers would rush to California beginning in 1849. Wheat (Transmississippi Vol. II, pp 194-200, map 497) comments that the large map "radically and permanently changed the entire picture of the West and its cartography." Custom slipcase in similar brown cloth has two compartments, one for the book and a second containing a box holding the very large folding map. In addition to containing a record of the expedition, the work contains astronomical, botanical and meteorological observations. This copy has its 22 plates and its 5 maps, which includes the very large folding map; the other 4 maps are bound into the book. Condition: there are a few early library markings stamped at several places in the book; the spine has been rebacked; the pages and plates and maps show foxing, ranging from slight to considerable. There are tide-marks to a number of pages at the back of the book. The very large map has been rebacked and has minimal damage at the folds and some tape repairs but is otherwise quite good. Overall, this is a very good, tight copy of the more desirable Senate edition. 693 pages.
