Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. This wonderful book deserves a high place in the pantheon of historical works, though it is largely forgotten today. The author assembles famous, or at least, striking sayings from historical events or works of history and then writes a paragraph or two about the context in which the saying was uttered. In this way, he converts mere platitudes into revealing commentary, often as revealing about the utterer as the subject of the utterance. He has also created a unique and useful system of cross-reference so that differing observations may be compared. This copy is in Very Good condition. No dust jacket is present. The book is square and solid -- the spine is not cracked and there are no loose pages. It is spotless inside, with lightly tanned pages. The exterior front and back covers are clean except for a single faint whitish scratch or mark on the back cover. The spine, on the other hand, is slightly soiled, somewhat discolored from sun exposure and shows some evidence of water droplets. Two corners of the back cover are very lightly bumped, the front corners are sharp. There is virtually no rub wear. A very nice copy of an interesting and somewhat scarce book. We will pack it with bubble-wrap and ship it in a sturdy box to ensure safe delivery.
