L'autore critica radicalmente il principio della separazione dello Stato dalla Chiesa come un'idea, una formola e un'aspirazione intrinsecamente ed eminentemente socialistica. L'Avogadro della Motta (Vercelli, 1798-ivi, 1865), riformatore delle regie scuole e consigliere di Carlo Alberto per l'insegnamento pubblico, deputato dal 1853, col Solaro della Margherita ed il Della Torre fu tra i parlamentari di maggiore tendenza anticavouriana e antisocialista. Fu autore di numerosi scritti di argomento storico, filosofico (fu fra l'altro un severo critico di Rosmini), giuridico, antropologico, devozionale, ecc. Italiano.

Reimpressione, curata postuma dal figlio dell'autore, di questo notevole saggio, apparso per la prima volta in forma anonima nel 1851, costituente una serrata confutazione dal punto di vista cattolico delle teorie socialiste e comuniste del XIX secolo (Owen, Fourier, Saint-Simon, Leroux, Proudhon, Ferrari, Mazzini, etc.). L' Avogadro (Vercelli, 1798-Torino, 1865) individua l'origine del socialismo nel razionalismo proprio della tradizione luterana e protestante in genere e giudica l' Illuminismo come il veicolo moderno dell' "incredulismo" e "indifferentismo" che a suo dire contraddistinguono le dottrine socialiste. Duri attacchi sono portati a Hegel, all'hegelismo e all'idealismo tedesco in genere. Vari capitoli e l'appendice sono dedicati ad un' accesa critica di Rosmini, alla sua teoria dell' ente ideale come possibile concetto panteistico e ai principali corollari speculativi delle sue opere. "Il saggio dell' A., rispetto alle polemiche antisocialiste di quegli anni, di un Camillo Cavour. e di un Rosmini., si caratterizzava per una piu' ampia, e non priva di note acute, analisi della genesi storica del socialismo, e per gli attacchi rivolti ai moderati, che si tentava di neutralizzare presentando loro lo spettro del comunismo" (Dizionario biograf. d. Lo studio, partendo da ricerche storiche e religiose intendeva contrastare i progetti di legge per il matrimonio civile e fu severamente attaccato da socialisti e liberali, tanto che successivamente uscirono edizioni ampliate per rispondere ai feroci attacchi. Avogadro della Motta fu riformatore delle R. scuole e consigliere di Carlo Alberto per l'insegnamento pubblico. Autore del saggio intorno al socialismo ebbe un ruolo di primo piano nella lotta antisocialista. Nel 1853 entr? in parlamento e col Solaro della Margherita ed il Della Torre formarono un nucleo di intransigenti anticavouriani.
