First Edition. 8vo, pp. 201. Illustrated with photos, fold-out map. Bound in blue cloth, a very good copy. Afro-Americana 3270. from Wikipedia: "Nat Turner's Rebellion (also known as the Southampton Insurrection) was a slave rebellion that took place in Southampton County, Virginia, during August 1831. Led by Nat Turner, rebel slaves killed from 55 to 65 people, the highest number of fatalities caused by any slave uprising in the Southern United States. The rebellion was put down within a few days, but Turner survived in hiding for more than two months afterwards. The rebellion was effectively suppressed at Belmont Plantation on the morning of August 23, 1831. There was widespread fear in the aftermath of the rebellion, and white militias organized in retaliation against the slaves. The state executed 56 slaves accused of being part of the rebellion. In the frenzy, many non-participant slaves were punished. At least 100 African Americans, and possibly up to 200, were murdered by militias and mobs in the area. Across the South, state legislatures passed new laws prohibiting education of slaves and free black people, restricting rights of assembly and other civil rights for free black people, and requiring white ministers to be present at all worship services.".

First Edition
The perspective of a white southerner on the slave revolt led by Nat Turner (1800 Ð 1831) in August 1831. As was the case with many white southerners in the Jim Crow era, William Sidney Drewry (1870 Ð 1948) saw the revolt as unjustified violence against slaveowners, because he believed that conditions under slavery were fair and idyllic. Drewry casts Turner as both a crazed religious zealot and a conniving villain, who betrayed the kindness of the plantation owners. The present work tracks the movement of the insurrection the group traveled through Southampton County. The map illustrates their passage. In The Land Shall be Deluged in Blood: A New History of the Nat Turner Revolt (2015), Patrick Breen describes the present work as Òthe first academic history of the revolt,Ó (p. 97). Breen states that DrewryÕs account recorded and collected, for the first time, much of the existing oral history of the revolt. Though Breen notes that DrewryÕs writing should always be approached with skepticism, given DrewryÕs proslavery convictions, the present work is, at least, a thorough synthesis of contemporary newspaper reporting and an ample collection of information on the topic of the revolt and the response of the residents of Southampton County. Octavo. 201 pp. With thirty-eight photo plates, including frontispiece. PublisherÕs blue cloth stamped in gold. Minor marginal toning. Foxing to bottom edge. A very good, bright, and tight copy. First edition. William Sidney Drewry (1870 Ð 1948) was a Richmond businessman. Breen, Patrick. The Land Shall be Deluged in Blood: A New History of the Nat Turner Revolt (Oxford UP, 2015).
