Cloth. Condition: Good Only. Richard Doyle (illustrator). First edition. A first edition copy of 'The Scouring of the White Horse' from the author of 'Tom Brown's School Days', Thomas Hughes . Hughes's second novel 'The Scouring of the White Horse' is often noted as being startlingly 'eccentric', a combination of a travel book and a record or local history all in the form of a novel. The text also contains a study of the class system in England, all the while describing the chalk-cut horse on the hill at Uffington (in Berkshire); making the text a compelling, if not unusual read. Delightfully illustrated throughout, with vignettes and decorative capitals, by Richard Doyle. In the publisher's bright blue cloth binding, with decorative gilt illustrations to the front board and spine. In a cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Lightly rubbed, with shelfwear and slight loss to the spine. Small mark to the rear board. Both joints are ever so slightly starting, with the rear hinge tender. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages bright, with the odd handling mark and spot. Small ink signature to the front free endpaper. Good Only. book.

Square 12mo (7 1/4" x 5 3/4"), original publisher's decorative gilt-stamped cloth with elaborate gilt lettering with foliage on spine and an even more elaborate gilt vine-&-figure decoration circling the front cover, which also has an image of the "White Horse" carved into a British hillside; illustrations by Richard "Dickie" Doyle [one of Charles Dickens' famous illustrators] on the front cover and throughout the book: including the double-page frontispiece (with tissue guard), several chapter heads or tailpieces, and in-text vignettes; yellow endpapers (renewed), 228 pages + [16] Christmas & other books offered by Macmillan. Thomas Hughes QC (1822 - 1896) was an English lawyer, judge, politician and author. He is most famous for his novel Tom Brown's School Days (1857), a semi-autobiographical work set at Rugby School, which Hughes and his brother George had attended. Richard "Dickie" Doyle (1824 - 1883) was a British illustrator of the Victorian era. His work frequently appeared, amongst other places, in Punch magazine. Doyle collaborated with John Leech, W.C. Stanfield and other artists to co-illustrate three Charles Dickens Christmas books, The Chimes (1844), The Cricket on the Hearth (1845) and The Battle of Life (1846). Surprisingly, he was the uncle of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, author of the Sherlock Holmes stories.
