A program, voiced by Douglas, of nineteenth century solos (mostly German classical, but also Scottish folksong) and 19th and 20th C poems by women: Dickinson, Wylie, Rukeyser, Gertrude Stein, Marianne Moore. NOTE THAT SINCE THE BOOK WEIGHS OVER ONE POUND, THERE MAY BE ADDITIONAL SHIPPING CHARGES IF YOU REQUIRE PRIORITY MAIL OR LIVE OUTSIDE THE U.S. XX [From the dust jacket flaps] By the end of her life Eleanor Roosevelt was one of the most widely loved women in the world. In this beautiful book the authors recreate?in text and in photographs?the warmth, the sincerity, the greatness, the energy, the shyness, and the wisdom of the person who became a universal symbol of the new role women were to assume in this century. Helen Gahagan Douglas, who knew Mrs. Roosevelt for more than twenty-three years, has captured the spirit of Eleanor Roosevelt and the mood of Americans?and people everywhere? who wish to remember her. In choosing the more than 150 photographs of Mrs. Roosevelt, Aaron Ezickson selected from thousands at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library at Hyde Park, the files of the Associated Press, and many other sources. The photographs, arranged in chronological order, show Mrs. Roosevelt from childhood to 1962: as a bride; with her family; in Albany as Governor's wife; in Washington as First Lady; traveling to American military bases during the Second World War; at the UN; with world leaders; among the poor, the sick, the desperate. The truly great photograph by Philippe Halsman that appears on the jacket and as a frontispiece has not heretofore been published. The captions for each photograph, tributes by Adlai Stevenson, U Thant, and other world leaders, add an important dimension to this book. [About the author] Eleanor Roosevelt had a profound influence on the life of Helen Gahagan Douglas. They were friends for more than twenty-three years. In the late 1930's Mrs. Douglas's efforts on behalf of migrant farm workers brought her to the attention of Mrs. Roosevelt. In order to support President Roosevelt's administration, Mrs. Douglas entered politics in California in 1940 as National Committeewoman and State Vice-Chairman. It was at the President's request that she ran for Congress, where she served as Representative from California from 1946 to 1951. In 1946 Mrs. Roosevelt and Mrs. Douglas were appointed by President Truman as members of the United States delegation to the First Assembly of the United Nations. Mrs. Douglas served there on the Financial and Economic Committee with Adlai E. Stevenson. Eleanor Roosevelt campaigned for Mrs. Douglas in her race for the Senate in 1950. They served together on the National Advisory Committee on Farm Labor from its founding in 1958. Mrs. Douglas visited Mrs. Roosevelt frequently at the White House, and later at Hyde Park, and at her home in New York City. Mrs. Douglas lives in New York with her husband, Melvyn Douglas. Book First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. 1st Edition. A treasure by the great actress, author, politician, and friend of Eleanor Roosevelt's, Helen Gahagan Douglas, boldly *SIGNED* by the author and dated 1964 across almost the entire width of the first free endpage, this is a first edition in Good condition with a Fair condition dust jacket. Helen Gahagan Douglas starred in the movie, She, based on the famous novel by H. Rider Haggard, thereby becoming "She who must be obeyed." Then she took up politics and politicians, becoming a U.S. Representative and openly having an affair with Congressman (and later President) Lyndon B. Johnson. She served three terms in Congress before she became the victim of a smear campaign during a run for a seat in the Senate, designed to make it seem that she had Communist sympathies. Richard Nixon was involved with this campaign and Douglas is given credit for being the first to dub him "Tricky Dick". This book is informed by Helen's 23-year friendship with Eleanor Roosevelt and includes over 150 photographs of her in public and private life. The book's interior is completely clean with no creases, marks or damage to pages. Exterior covers are very slightly soiled (barely visible), toned on the periphery, and show light water stains along the top and bottom edges of the back cover only. None of these stains reached the pages inside. None of the book's corners are bumped and there is not more than a hint of rub wear to bottom edges. The dust jacket is not price-clipped ($5.95) and the front panel is completely clean but the back panel shows light soiling. Both front and back show light scratches and rubbing. It has some wear along the edges including light creases and some chips and tears, the longest of which is about 2". Will be bubble-wrapped to protect the corners and shipped in a sturdy box to ensure safe delivery. Signed by Author(s).

This copy SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Douglas on the half-title page: "To Truddy Taub - Helen Gahagan Douglas." She famously lost a contest for a California senate seat to a young Richard Nixon in 1950, where Nixon's "dirty tricks" were first put on full display. After meeting the Roosevelts early in Franklin's presidency, she became a close firend and confidant of Eleanor.

This versatile actress was married to film heartthrob Melvyn Douglas and was also a successful Congresswoman, diplomat and author. Partly-printed DS, 1p, 7¼" X 10½", Washington, DC, 1945 May 2. Very good. Minor wear, bit of soiling and couple of acid spots from editorial staples. "Who's Who in America" updating form, consisting of Douglas' typed biographical entry for the 1946-47 edition, bearing several additions in her hand and her full signature in black ink at the close. Also bearing various editors' markings in green, blue and red ink and pencil. Comes with 5 other related typed documents, none signed, from Douglas' "Who's Who" records -- a carbon of the above document, a 2-page mimeographed chronology no doubt sent by Douglas' congressional office, a biographical data form, and so on. A fascinating and unusual, accompanied by a scarce original 1947 glossy 6½" X 8½" news agency photograph of Douglas carrying a basket of groceries to the House of Representatives.
