First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First edition. Illustrations by William L. Sheppard. Cover design by Elizabeth Geary. Octavo. 136pp. Glossary of dialect terms. Green pictorial cloth stamped in yellow, brown, orange, dark green, and black. Small bookplate on pastedown and ink owner name. Very good or better with toning, a bit of edgewear and a few tiny splash mark on the rear board. The scarce second book by an African-American poet who was a teacher and later a Baptist preacher in Virginia, containing 40 poems on religion and racial themes, some in dialect. At the back is a three-page glossary of dialect terms with an Appendix written by John H. Smyth, former U.S. Ambassador to Liberia, which originally appeared in Davis's rare first book, *Idle Moments, Containing Emancipation and Other Poems*. Smyth speaks about the nature of Black American speech "as marked and distinctive in the dialect of all the people of the South Atlantic and the South and Southwestern States, without distinction of race"; and also suggests its affect on white Southerns who "heard the jargon or patois of the Negro in this frantic effort to overcome the hereditary limitation of his own language, more frequently than the purity of the England's English spoken, and unconsciously, the provincialism in speech of the blacks have been stamped upon the English of the South." A rare work. *OCLC* locates one copy. *French* p.59.
