Book
Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Fourth Printing. 158 Pages plus a Page of Errata. A 1970 Fourth Printing of the 1960 Copyright. Previous owner's five-line name on front endpaper. Text pages are flawless. This book deals with editorials, official reports, and like materials of an essay type, in which style and structural pattern have a wider range and vocabulary has virtually no limit. This is a more difficult part of the content of a newspaper and leads to the reading of periodicals of a higher literary level. Of the twelve annotated selections in this book, the first eight are taken from Communist newspapers, whose style is closer to the spoken colloquial and thus easier reading, and the last four from Nationalist newspapers in which the traditional newspaper style is maintained. As part of its language reform movement, the Communist government in 1956 promulgated three lists of simplified writings for complicated characters and has ordered their exclusive use throughout the country. This book assumes previous recognition of 1000 characters and it builds total recognition up to 1200. The student should approach the use of the present text with an overall recognition of approximately 1500 single characters. Contents in 12 Articles: Voroshi1ov Visits China, Chu Teh:Welcoming Comrade Voroshi1ov to China, A Joint Statement by the Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs and a Japanese Mission to China, Chou En-1ai: Government Achievement in 1956, Mme. Sun Yat-sen: Unity Is Our Strength, Malaya Achieves Independence - an editorial, Chou Ku-ch'eng: Some Reflections on National Day - an essay, Thirty Years of Greatness and Glory - an editorial on the 30th Anniversary of the Chinese Red Army, Premier Yu's Statement on the Sino- American Defense Treaty, Chiang Kai-shek: United Nations Day Message, President Chiang Answers an American Newspaperman's Questions, and A Brief Sketch of NATO.
