Cloth. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good Plus. ARC Advance Review Copy. San Francisco: Holden-Day, Inc., 1966. First Edition, review copy. Publisher's complimentary slips laid in. Octavo, 509 pp. Maroon cloth with gilt lettering, photo-pictorial jacket. Association rubber stamp of noted San Francisco collector and bibliographer George King Fox at front pastedown, else near fine book in a very good plus or better jacket showing a bit of small-scale peripheral chipping. Scarce review copy of the first book in the distinguished scientific, educational, publishing and television career of noted Cornell scientist Carl Sagan, who would in those ways go on after this collaboration to become probably the most famous name worldwide within the subject of this book - exobiology. Replete with photographs, charts, and even cartoons, this hefty and rich compendium was used as a college textbook long after its publishing, at which time Sagan - looking spiffy and wet-behind-the-ears-young in the jacket photo - was an Assistant Professor of Astronomy at Harvard. Destined to become a historical landmark in scientific publishing as exobiology continues out into the universe to further realize itself. L-31n.

First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. xic, [2], 509, [3] pages. Illustrations (some in color). Tables. Figures. DJ has some wear, soiling, tears and chips. Includes Preface by Carl Sagan, A Note on Mathematical and Physical Units, Chapter 1: Perspectives; Chapter 2: Extraterrestrial life as a psychological projective test. Also contains chapters on The Universe; Life in the Universe; and a Bibliography. Iosif Samuilovich Shklovsky (1 July 1916 - 3 March 1985) was a Soviet astronomer and astrophysicist. He is remembered for work in theoretical astrophysics and other topics, as well as for his 1962 book on extraterrestrial life, the revised and expanded version of which was co-authored by American astronomer Carl Sagan in 1966 as Intelligent Life in the Universe. This was the first comprehensive discussion of this field. Discussing the biological as well as astronomical issues of the subject, its unique format, alternating paragraphs written by Shklovsky and Sagan, demonstrated the deep mutual regard between the two and allowed them to express their views without compromise. He won the Lenin Prize in 1960 and the Bruce Medal in 1972. Asteroid 2849 Shklovskij and the crater Shklovsky (on the Martian moon Phobos) are named in his honor. He was a Corresponding Member of Soviet Academy of Sciences since 1966. Carl Edward Sagan (November 9, 1934 - December 20, 1996) was an American astronomer, planetary scientist, cosmologist, astrophysicist, astrobiologist, author, and science communicator. His best known scientific contribution is research on extraterrestrial life. His 1966 translation/rewriting of a book by I. S. Shklovskii, Intelligent Life in the Universe, established Sagan as a first-rate popularizer of science. That status didn't win him friends in academia; in 1968 he was denied tenure at Harvard and moved to Cornell, where he became one of the stars of the faculty. This book, the product of a unique international collaboration between a world famous Russian astronomer and a leading American space scientist, is the first popular and accurate modern discussion of the entire panorama of natural evolution--including the origins of the universe, the evolution of stars and planets, the beginnings of life on earth, and the development of intelligence and technical civilizations among galactic communities. Included is a great deal of new material, some never before published in any form and some previously available only in technical journals inaccessible to the general reader. The book is written primarily for the intelligent layperson. Where necessary, details have been included in a non-technical way so, that the popular reader can critically judge the train of argument. Presumed First Edition, First printing thus.
