NO remainder marks. [From jacket flaps] A sensitive and gifted artist, Seth Eastman was nevertheless an able soldier who was brevetted brigadier general upon retirement. He always turned a part of each military assignment into a sketching excursion, and for most of us today the happiest result of his career was his portrayal of nineteenth-century scenes. In 1848 and 1849 Eastman made a journey down the Mississippi and through Texas, recording the scenes which caught his eye in 136 incredibly delicate pencil drawings on the pages of a leather-bound sketchbook. His charming, detailed sketches are beautifully reproduced in this facsimile edition. Focused on the country through which he was passing, not on his military assignment, they reflect the contemplative quiet of places at peace: the Mississippi River and its sandbars, bends, snags, driftwood, and wrecked boats; the bordering tree-covered hills and steep, rocky cliffs; the old frontier settlements of early pioneer times; the river craft in all their picturesque variety - pirogues, flatboats, keelboats, ferries, wharf boats; the woodyards, stumpy banks, rail fences, and log cabins of villages; the broad expanses of Southern plantations, with their cotton or sugar wharves and their slave quarters; and the cities along the river - Vicksburg, Natchez, and New Orleans. Eastman has provided also the finest visual record of early Texas, portraying with interest and care the pilot houses at Indian Point; the dog-run cabins, live oaks, and moss-shrouded post oaks at Seguin; the missions at San Antonio; the quaint homes of brave German settlers in Comanche country at Fredericks-burg; and enticing spots along the Leona and Frio rivers. A realistic artist, Eastman recorded accurately the scenes that attracted his eye, but he was far more than a mere draughtsman. The dimensions of atmosphere and feeling, in combination with his ability to draw with sharply etched realistic detail, gave his work the quality of art. This charming Sketchbook was made available for publication by the Pearl Brewing Company, which had purchased it from Eastman's great-granddaughter, and by the Marion Koogler McNay Art Institute of San Antonio, to which the Sketchbook has been presented by the Pearl Brewing Company. Lois Burkhalter, of the McNay Art Institute, is author of the Introduction.
