If his eye be tired of the charming repetition of scenery in the southern parts of Sweden . he will find ample variety amid the Norwegian mountains, where nothing is wanting to combine the romantic with the beautiful. If he pursue his course along the wild rocks of the western main . he will view with mingled admiration and astonishment those giant features of creation, around the heads of which . the whirlwind of the North howls in concert with the roaring billows below. Should he turn his steps to the boundless forests and wastes of Lapland . he will in every direction meet with scenery worthy of his pencil, and subjects that cannot fail to arrest his contemplation' (pp. vi-vii).Upon graduating from Magdalen College, Oxford, Brooke spent much time in foreign travel. He was an original member of the Travellers' Club, founder and president of the Raleigh Club, and a fellow of both the Royal Geographical Society and the Royal Society, equally 'at ease in a Finnish sauna or treating hisRaleigh Clubfriends to dine on reindeer' (ODNB).Abbey 248.

Book
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First edition. 4to (270x210mm). pp. xvi, 612. Frontispiece and twenty one lithographed plates and eight lithographed vignettes, folding map. Full calf, spine lavishly decorated in gilt, red morocco label to spine, lettered in gilt. Save for a few marks in near fine condition. Internally there is some foxing and spotting, heavy in places but overall a nice copy of a groundbreaking travel book. Arthur de Capell Brooke, from a land-owning family and the son of a baronet resigned his army commission after the Battle of Waterloo and embarked on a life of adventure and travel. In May 1820, he began his first serious journey. This was an overland trip through Sweden and Norway to the Northern Cape. He was almost certainly the first Englishman to make this trek, Northern Scandinavia being generally regarded as terra incognita. Brooke settled for a while in Fuglenaes and got to know the Laplanders, learning to speak Norwegian and some Lapp. On his return to England, he founded the Raleigh Club where explorers and travellers met to exchange stories and eat the food of the various exotic places they had visited. Brooke was also, in 1830, one of the founders of the Royal Geographical Society which later absorbed his Raleigh Club. Although he seems to have loved the cold north, writing three books on this part of the world, he clearly felt the need to thaw out occasionally as, in 1831, he published Sketches in Spain and Morocco.
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. '. With Various Observations Relating to Finmark and its Inhabitants; made During a Residence at Hammerfest, near the North Cape '. xiv + 612 pp + plates as called for + large foldg, linen backed, map loosely inserted at rear. Bookplate of 2 previous owners on paste down fep. Five of the plates are quite clearly tinted but a number of others seem slightly enhanced and hence may be catalogued as such in some references. One of the vignettes is tinted. Foxing is quite heavy to the frontis, of the remainder of the plates about half are slightly foxed ( mainly to the margins )the other half are clean and bright. The map is foxed and there is wear to the folds but it is very sound with no tears. There are no library markings or other indicators of institutional contact. The front hinge is tender resulting in the frontis, title page and preface pages being a trifle shaken/loose Very good hardback in near contemporary full calf with attractive gilt decoration to spine. Please note although the title page is dated 1826 the book is as listed in Abbey Travel 250 ( JA 4478 ) This copy lacks the advertisement at the rear. The foldg map was at one stage bound in at the rear but presumably because of the bulky nature and resultant 'spraining' it has been taken out and is included as a loose map. We assume the advertisement was taken out (and discarded) at the same time.
