Hardcover. Condition: VG. No Jacket. Map Frontis (illustrator). 1st. Johannes Andersen, a Dane by birth (1873-1962), became a notable figure in NZ literature, particularly as historian on NZ and Maori subjects, was founding librarian at the Alexander Turnbull Library and lectured on a wide selection of topics. His" Banks Peninsula Place-Names " was his sixth work, published by the Government Printer as Manual No 6 of the New Zealand Board of Science and Art. Each alphabetically listed place-name gives the Maori name or that applied by settler/explorer plus the source from which it originated. An English translation for the Maori name is also provided. In the "Topographical History" section the history of the Peninsula outlined. The book's 25 page introduction contains much information of a general nature relating the whole area. First edition of 1927, 238 pages, illustrated only with a large and detailed fold-out map at the back, showing the peninsular area edged in green. This is in excellent condition with one tiny edge tear. The green hard covers have bright and sharp gilt front and spine titles with an outline NZ map to the front, with the Banks Peninsular location marked. The front board cloth cover has lifted in light corrugations in from trom vertical edge, There is no indication of damp damage and no perforation to the cloth. Light wear to corners and lower spine. Front and rear end papers are patterned, with ink former owner name to front pastedown. On a number of pages through the book lightly pencilled names have been noted in the vertical margin, at the point where they appear in the text. These are so light as to be unobtrusive and could easily be erased. If there were no "corrugations" this book could be assessed as NF.
