Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 4th Edition. The Early Canterbury Runs By BY L. G. D. Acland. Publisher: Whitcoulls, Christchurch 1975, 4th Edition. Extensively revised & illustrated edition by W H Scotter. Very good hardback with good jacket. Slight compression to spine ends, small name label to title page, light tanning, pages very good. Tanning to end and edges. Jacket is chipped and rubbed at edges with a faded spine and large repaired tear to back. 417 pages, illustrated. The first edition of "The Early Canterbury Runs" was published in 1930 and followed several years in which Acland's series on these stations appeared in the The Christchurch Press. These provided the basis for the first printing, a second series of which appeared in 1940 with a second edition 1946, a third with glossary in 1951. This fourth edition of 1975 was extensively revised by W H Scotter and incorporated annotations by G R Macdonald. More importantly the fourth was also the first illustrated edition of the work, featuring maps, early contemporary art and photos. It also provides brief biogs of Auckland, Macdonald and Scotter. The number of runs described is about 170, listed alphabetically at the front, where a further 21 run name changes are recorded. Truly a monumental, history of the beginnings of NZ's agricultural economy and the famous Canterbury lamb.
