A reading list from the nine-year-old who read 272 books in six months
Here’s a heartwarming story from Knutsford in Cheshire. A nine-year-old school girl, Faith Jackson from Hough Green, has ploughed through 272 books in six months. She began keeping track on 1 July at the suggestion of her mother, Laura, so they could see how she did during the school holidays. However, Faith kept counting once September rolled around.
When Faith was seven, she was diagnosed with ‘dyslexic tendencies’ and a reading ability below what it should be for her age. That’s all in the past now.
She said: “When I finish a book I usually feel sad, if it’s a series I’m desperate to start the next one, I wish there were more. Also, when I’m reading, and especially when I’ve just finished a book, I wish I could magic myself into the book.”
We asked mum Laura if Faith could give us her top 10 favourite reads from the past six months, which includes a bumper helping of Enid Blyton, and here they are in no particular order:
Horse Of Fire by Patricia Leitch
The Chalet School In Exile by Elinor M. Brent-Dyer
More Adventures Of Willow Farm by Enid Blyton
Shadow The Sheepdog by Enid Blyton
The Mountain Of Adventure by Enid Blyton
The Shore Road Mystery by Franklin W. Dixon
Wonder by R. J. Palacio
The Kitten Nobody Wanted by Holly Webb
The Christmas Mystery by Jostein Gaarder
Flat Stanley Bumper Bind Up by Jeff Brown
“She actually short-listed 25 and wanted to stick with all of them,”said Laura. “For her choices that are part of a series, she’s really voting for the whole series, not just the individual book.”
