Bibliographic Details

Title: Wetboek van den Oranjevrijstaat 1891

Publisher: Volksraad of the Orange Free State, Bloemfontein

Publication Date: 1892

Binding: Hardcover

Book Condition: Very Good

Edition: 1st Edition

This is a well-restored ex-library copy of the consolidated laws of the Orange Free State Republic for the 38-year period between 1854, the year of the treaty between Sir George Russell Clerk and representatives of the Free State, and 1892. Half-bound in tan calf and brown pebble-cloth boards. Plain endpapers. viii + 876 + xl pp of text, appendixes and index. The 13 appendixes reprint the Aliwal Convention, the treaties of friendship, commerce or extradition with the United States of America, Belgium, Portugal, the Netherlands, Basutoland, Italy, the South African Republic and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland; the memorandum of agreement on Griqualand West, and railway extension and political agreements with the South African Republic. The binding has been strengthened with a new matching spine, with raised bands and the original gilt-on-black spine label laid down, new endpapers, with the original free endpapers retained, and new head and tail bands. The corners are bumped and there are some small blemishes to the upper board. There are two different library stamps and a few words of handwriting and some stamped numbers on the retained front free endpaper and another library stamp on a back free leaf. The binding remains tight and the contents are unmarked and undiscoloured, testifying to the high quality of the original printing, paper and binding - by C Borckenhagen of the Stoomdrukkerij van de Oranjevrijstaatsche Nieuwsblad-Maatschappij. This is a heavy book - 1.51kg - and very scarce. Bookseller Inventory # 001204
