Canadiana/Anericana. Akureyri, Iceland: [s.n.] - Prentsmioja Odds Björnssonar, 1909. DESCRIPTION: 200 pages/s. ; 17 cm./sm. Very Good in decorative card covers. SUBJECTS: CanadianaAmericana, Ferðasögur; Ferðalög; Canada/Kanada ; North America/Norður Ameríka. The AUTHOR, Kvaran, a leading Icelandic novelist and critic, emigrated to Canada Canada in the 1880s, where he edited the pivotal Icelandic-Canadian newspaper Logberg and took a prominent role in Icelandic-Canadian community and political affairs; in 1891 he was selected President of the Icelandic Liberal Association of Manitoba. He returned to Iceland about 1895, after a ten year residency in Canada (Kristjanson). Einar Hjörleifsson was also known as Einar H. Kvaran, and while some bibliographies and reference use both names, others do not. Stefan Einarson, in his History of Icelandic Prose Writers (Cornell University Press, p. 237) states that "Einar H. Kvaran, in America [read Canada] 1885-95 wrote his first masterpiece, Vonir (1890) in Winnipeg over a purely Icelandic-American [read Canadian] motif". Title explains the contents. Stephan G. Stephansson organized two well-attended meeting for Kvaran when he visited Markerville (see p. 131). Kvaran also travelled through Icelandic settlements in N. Dakota and Minnesota on this trip. This is therefore a travelogue of North America. Much on Western Canada - he went to Red Deer, Edmonton, Gimli, etc.; much on Winnipeg. Referenced in Hjartar, p. 57 . At time of cataloguing, only one listing on Amicus; not in Peel. Bookseller Inventory # 36292
