nFINE/VG slipcase. RARE UNIQUE BLACK LEATHER binding of the 1946 Viking Press edition. In matching cloth slipcase. Specially commissioned by Fowler, for his lifeling friend and mentor Jim Lockhart. Gold titling on 4-riibed spine names both Fowler and Lockhart. SIGNED by AUTHOR on blank front end paper with inscription reading, "This is for my great friend and comrade and teacher, Jim Lockhart, always with affection and regards, Gene Fowler 1946". The book was originally printed in 1931 describing Fowler's early years getting into journalism in Colorado. On page 277 and following Lockhart is described coming from university professorship to take the editorial desk of Associated Press. He spoke with James Nolan, Editor of the "The Republic" about Fowler, recommending he hire Fowler. Moving up to that job through Lockhart's recommendation set Fowler's life and career path - this special leather bound copy being a small token of esteen and thanks, Fowler to Lockhart. Fowler himself was known in Hollywood for screenplays, books, biographies and memoirs - one on John Barrymore - who was among his special friends that also included Jimmy Durante, and W.C.Fields. Wikipedia bio notes that W.C. Fields openly admitted Gene Fowler's two sons were the only children he could stand. There was a long standing rumor that Fowler was the illigitimate son of Buffalo Bill Cody - who he himself interviewed and asked Buffalo Bill about his rumored philandering - and maybe paternity. Fowler was never allowed to attend any Wild West shows after that. Fowler worked for the Denver Post, New York Daily Mirror and King Features. RARE journalism/Hollywood item - wholly UNIQUE. Tipped in biographical information and long obituary article with more life details. [B222]. Bookseller Inventory # 013069
