Kupferstich Amsterdam 1651, 55 x 43 cm (Bugeinriß sorgfältig restauriert, sonst schönes Exemplar). * Campbell 78; Hollstein XXXVIII,263/II; Bagrow/C. S. 58ff.; Koeman III, S.178 Nr. 61. This is an uncommon early issue of a finely engraved and decorative map of European Russia, including the Baltic provinces, Lithuania and part of Scandinavia. It is based on that by Hessel Gerritsz of 1613, which was compiled from manuscripts brought back from Russia, by the Dutch mapmaker Isaac Massa (who travelled to Russia in 1609), apparently including one by Crown Prince Fjodor Godunov, to whom the large inset plan of Moscow is attributed. There are also small inset views of Archangelsk, Narva and Ivangorod, the Moscow Kremlin and also miniature views of a sauna bath and a watermill. The Gerritsz map data here are revised and inproved especially in the North. Finally, the only other important deviations from the 1613 map are some inadvertent errors in geographic names rendered by the engraver (B./. p.62) This example has a good restored tear in the bottom middle fold. (Jonathan Potter, London, Stocklist 16/1998: 950 Pound Sterling) (Bugeinriß sorgfältig restauriert, sonst schönes Exemplar). Bookseller Inventory #
