Title: Stephen Hero. A Part of The First Draft of "...
Publisher: New Directions, New York
Publication Date: 1944
Edition: First Printing of the First US Edition
A Very Good copy with sunning to the binding and wear to the corners, several page tips have been dog-eared, lacking the dust jacket. This portion of Joyce's original draft of what would later become "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man" is thought to have been written between 1904 and 1906. The original manuscript had spanned some 1000 pages and, according to Joyce, had been rejected by twenty publishers which led him to throw the rejected pages into a fire. His wife supposedly retrieved the manuscript from being destroyed, and over time various sections of the original script to be sold off to several institutions and private parties. The first 518 pages of the original have apparently disappeared for good. Years later, Joyce began rewriting his "autobiographical" account of an artist's life. The pages printed here represent approximately 93 pages of what became the book published under the title of "Portrait.". Bookseller Inventory # 23553
