Title: Without Sorcery -- ORIGINAL ART
Publisher: Philadelphia: Prime Press,
Publication Date: 1948
Edition: First Edition.
Twelve of thirteen title vignettes by L. Robert Tschirky for the first edition of Sturgeon's first book, on heavy stock with tissue guards, 4" x 6". Publisher's annotations in pencil to the verso of each. Tschirky, who illustrated the jackets for a number of the publications of Prime Press, went on to become an encyclopedia editor and occasional travel writer. The art, which features a fineness of detail lost in the publication, offers evocative and often allusive illustrations for each story. Included are the illustrations for ''The Ultimate Egoist", "It", "Poker Face", "Shottle Bop", "Artnan Process", "Memorial", "Ether Breather", "Butyl and the Breather", "Brat", "Two Percent Inspiration", "Cargo", and ''Maturity." Regrettably, the vignette for ''Macrocosmic God," the final story in the collection appears to have been lost. From the estate of James A. Williams, the publisher of Prime Press.
