Approximately 4-1/4 x 3-1/4 inches. sepia photograph. The image shows a young Edward dressed in a top coat and bareheaded seated in a carriage together with Sir Lionel who is wearing a hat. In the background is a three story building. On the back of the photograph is written "H.R.H. The Prince of Wales & Sir Lionel Halsey. Taken by J.P. Rogers, 209 Swanston St., Melb. 29.5.20" in brown ink.The Prince of Wales was on an official visit to Melbourne with ships of the Royal Navy in May, 1920, and had his quarters onboard H.M.S. Renown. Sir Lionel Halsey (1872-1949). Having joined the Royal Navy as a cadet in 1885 he was promoted to Lieutenant eight years later. He served in the South African War of 1899-1902. In the pre-war years before 1914 Halsey served as Flag Captain to the Commander-in-Chief, Australia, Sir Wilmot Fawkes. In October 1918 - the month before the war ended - Halsey was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Australian Navy.With:1.Programme of the Landing of H.R.H. Prince of Wales, May 26th 1920. The Prince of Wales, 28th May 1920" which shows the positions of the various ships, the layout of the harbour, etc., also a foldout comparing "The Royal Australian Navy of 1914 and 1920", 8 pp. descriptive text, some advertisements.2. "The Equerry in Waiting is desired by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales to invite Surgeon Captain and Mrs. Eames to a small dance onboard H.M.S. Renown ." 4-1/4 x 5-3/5 cream card stock with the Prince of Wales' emblem at top. Fine.3."The Government of Victoria request the honour of the Company of Surgeon Captain E.I.P. & Mrs. Eames at an At Home in the Public Library, Melbourne. His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales ." 5 x 6-3/4 inches, cream card stock with the Royal emblem at top. In upper left corner is written in black ink "Accepted". Fine.4."The Ministers of State for the Commonwealth of Australia request the honour of the presence of Surgeron Captain E.I.P. Eames Ret. and Guest . His Excellency the Governor General and H.R.H. The Prince of Wales." 5-3/4 x 7-1/4 inches, cream card stock with the Commonwealth of Australia's emblem at top. Fine.5.The Government of Victoria At Home In Honour of the Visit of His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales. 6-1/2 x 4-1/2 inches, white cardstock wrappers with the Royal emblem in gilt on front wrapper. The programme for the visit, detailing where to go, music to be played, etc. Laid in are two loose leaves, one "God Bless the Prince of Wales" a poem by an unknown, the other giving instructions on where to assemble, etc. Fine.6.Dinner program."Dinner In Honour of His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales Given by the Naval & Mili8tary Boards of the Commonwealth of Australia, Menzie's Hotel, Melbourne, Saturday, 29th May, 1920". 9-1/2 x 6 inches, cream textured cardboard, the emblem of Australia in gilt at top, printed in brown.
