An essentially Fine copy of the first UK edition, first printing (light pushing to the spine ends, board corners quite mildly bumped), in an essentially Fine dust jacket (light sunning to the spine panel, quite light edge wear), SIGNED BY NELLY SACHS on the title page; a gathering of "Glowing Enigmas I" (as well as II and III), on of the author's most important poem sequences, a selection of poems drawn from six other of her Poetry collections, as well as the verse play "Eli" -- a mystery Play on the sufferings of Israel. Born in Berlin (1891), Nelly Sachs became an unofficial spokeswoman expressing the plight and grief of the Jews. Increasingly frightened by the Nazi's rise, she and her elderly mother fled Germany in 1940, one day before Nelly Sachs was scheduled to report to a concentration camp. Her flight was made possible by her friend and frequent correspondent Selma Lagerlof (herself the winner of the 1909 Nobel Prize in Literature) who persuaded the Swedish Royal family to intervene and arrange her release from Germany. Nelly Sachs won the 1966 Nobel Prize in Literature "for her outstanding lyrical and dramatic writing, which interprets Israel's destiny with touching strength" (sharing the prize with Shmuel Yosef Agnon). In presenting the Prize to Nelly Sachs, Anders Österling, Member of the Swedish Academy, stated "Nelly Sachs's writing is today the most intense artistic expression of the reaction of the Jewish spirit to suffering, and thus it can indeed be said to fulfill the humane purpose underlying Alfred Nobel's will." Summarizing the play "Eli", Österling stated: "Let it suffice here to mention the mystery play Eli (1950) about an eight-year-old boy who is beaten to death by a German soldier in Poland when he blows on his shepherd's pipe to call on heaven's help when his parents are taken away. The visionary cobbler Michael manages to trace the culprit to the next village. The soldier has been seized by remorse and, at the encounter in the forest, he collapses without Michael's having to raise his hand against him. This ending denotes a divine justice which has nothing to do with earthly retribution." In our experience, signed copies of Nelly Sachs works are not at all common and signed copies of her works in English translation are as scarce as hens teeth. A very near Fine copy, SIGNED BY NELLY SACHS. QUITE SCARCE INDEED. Bookseller Inventory #
