Classic first printed in England in 1643 on the spirituality and inner thought processes of a physician. The title translates as "the religion of a doctor." Samuel Pepys in his famous diary of that period praised this work for its wit and learning, and the book found itself on the Papal list of prohibited readings (Index Librorum Prohibitorum) by 1645. Other essays by Browne in the volume include one on "Urn Burial" and another on dreams. This copy was handsomely bound in the early 20th century in a pleasing medium brown leather with a slightly pebbled texture. Five raised bands on spine and author and title in bright gilt. Unfortunately the book must have been opened and closed considerably in its early life because both covers have become detached although they are still present. They retain something of a connection to the body of the book through the use of a clear plastic covering that draws both covers to the spine joints and keeps them there fairly well during and opening and closing the book. The binding material is still in very nice bright condition and a future rebacking might be in order. The leather of the fold overs is gilt lined at the outer edges where the leather meets the marbled paper of the paste-down endpapers. All four marbled endpapers present in a pleasing multi-colored swirling design. Top edge of text block gilt. Contents of book very clean. Striking frontispiece engraving of the author. This edition is undated and it has been thought by some that it dates to around 1910. It was printed at the Ballantyne Press in London. A previous owner wrote his name on a front blank flyleaf with date of 1928. There is the small antique sticker of a Pasadena, Calif. book dealer on a rear blank leaf that looks to be from about that time frame or possibly even a bit earlier.
