VG+. Deep red blind embossed boards, gold titled spine. ex-lib w/ minimal markings. After the US Civil War the US Navy fell into a deep depression of limited dated equipment, vessels and arms. Investment was monitored by aseparate Advisory Boards. This changed 1881-1884. Appropriations were initiated for a new generation of "ironclads" including a new series for coastal defence called "torpedo boats". In fact, detailed here for the first time is a description of torpedoes, no long the title of land-mines, but now a 'movable torpedo' to be shot from speeding 'torpedo boats' directed at enemy boats, the Whitehead torpedo being 'state of the art' in 1886. An obituary section at the rear lists severalnaval officers, theri military history. Notably one listing reports the death of GEN ULYSSES S. GRANT, U.S. Army - honorary member of the institute (1880), July 22m 1885. PROVENANCE : Book plate "Estate of Wm Letts Oliver". Letts was California Bay Area industrialilst (1844-1918) founder of California Cap Co. (mining explosives) and amateur photographer (his collection now housed in the Bancroft Library.
