FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS of de Broglie's presentation of his revolutionary theory of the wave-particle duality of matter; an expansion of the ideas originally outlined in his doctoral thesis. PMM 417. "The simple atoms of Dalton had already been modified before 1926 by the discoveries of radio-activity and the splitting of the atom; but now the Duc de Broglie- in 'Waves and Movements'- proposed an even more radical amendment. Light had been shown to behave as though it were waves and also as though it were particles; matter had been always supposed to be made up of particles, but perhaps it shared the duality of light. Perhaps indeed there might be circumstances in which matter might behave as though it were a wave. "This idea was tested and confirmed by Davisson and Germer in 1927. Thus the duality of both light and matter had been established, and physicists had to come to terms with fundamental particles which defied simple theories and demanded two sets of 'complementary' descriptions, each applicable under certain circumstances, but incompatible with one another" (Printing and the Mind of Man, 417). De Broglie was awarded the 1929 Nobel Prize in Physics "for his discovery of the wave nature of electrons". Paris: Gauthier-Villars, 1926. Octavo, original printed wrappers; custom cloth box. Modest bookplate on inside front wrapper; tape repair to initial blank. Minor discoloration to wrapper edges; an extremely well-preserved copy in original wrappers. Bookseller Inventory # 432
