About this Item
No date but second ed. gives date of publ. of 1st ed. as January 1938. Publisher's original blue boards faded and shelf-rubbed. The "Pretorius Wapen" in faded gilt to the upper board. Faded gilt titling to spine which is sunned and discoloured. Publisher's details in faded gilt to lower board. The corners are scuffed as are the spine extremities. The boards' edges are rubbed. The spine edge is rubbed at the upper board and there is a long split at the lower board edge as well as some fraying. There are no markings, of ownership or otherwise, and the contents are undiscoloured. The binding is good although there is a developing crack at p. 385. There is some light spotting to the edges of the text-block. The volume presents a number of puzzles however. There is a half-title page but no title page and no indication that this has been removed. The plain blue endpapers (which may be of later provenance) bear the stamp "Parys Public Library ORC" and yet there is no other indication of library provenance and if the book was published in 1938 this would have been 28 years after the dissolution of the Orange River Colony (ORC). This presumably alludes to the transitional nature of Afrikaans at the time of publication. 491pp. + xxvii (index). Seller Inventory # 001193
