Title: Jan Compagnie in Japan 1600-1817
Publisher: Oxford University Press, Oxford
Publication Date: 1968
Book Condition: Good
Dust Jacket Condition: Good
Good condition reprint edition (1968) hardcover and dust jacket. Scarce title. Ex-Library with standard library marks, labels and pocket. Book is square and sound. Aside from library marks, clean and unmarked inside. Covers appear to be completely clean, but I can only see part of them because the dust jacket is glued to the front and rear pastedowns and so cannot be removed (without leaving scars.) One corner very lightly bent at the tip. No rub wear. Dust jacket shows light soiling. It has been placed in a clear plastic sleeve for protection. It is not price-clipped and has no chips or tears. "The peculiar position of the Hollanders in Japan under the Tokugawa regime, as the sole representatives of European culture and commerce, resulted in their factory at Deshima (whither they removed from Hirado in 1641) becoming one of the most curious plots for more than two hundred years. Nearly every historical work published in the West about Japan devotes some space to a brief description thereof. While it is easy for the European reader to visualise from these books how the Hollanders lived at Deshima and the way in which they regarded Japan, it is by no means so easy for him to learn how the Japanese regarded their Red-haird Barbarian visitors. It is one of the aims of this book to give some notion of contemporary Japanese ideas about the Hollanders, together with an account of the influence exercised by Western science and culture upon the Japanese." -- the publishers. Will be bubble-wrapped and shipped in a sturdy box to ensure safe delivery. Bookseller Inventory # ABR29
