Title: The Heathen Chinee
Publisher: The Western News Company, Boston
Publication Date: 1870
Edition: First (independent) edition.
12mo. disbound, tan wrappers decorated and lettered in black. With nine lithographed illustrations by Joseph Hull. The only illustrated edition approved by the author, to whom the drawings were submitted before publication, was thought to be the James R. Osgood & Co. of Boston, in 1871. In a letter to his publisher Harte refers interestingly to the proposed edition: "I have had some talk with Eyting this morning and think I gave him several ideas about the ÔHethen Chinee' and his Pagan brother Ð the California miner." (Harte, ed., Letters of Bret Harte, p. 12). However, this edition precedes the Osgood edition and was an independent publication, almost simultaneous with the work as originally published by Harte in The Overland Monthly as part of the title "Plain Language from Truthful James." With:"Bret Harte's Heathen Chinee and Several (Pig) Tales" Illustrated. 32 pp. Disbound. Three stab holes in margin, else fine. [BAL 7248]. Title page with old scotch tape on two edges and some loss of paper, plate 1 with old cello tape marks round edges, else fine. Bookseller Inventory # 30768
