Title: HYPERION, A ROMANCE. By The Author of ...
Publisher: New York, Samuel Colman
Publication Date: 1839
Book Condition: Very Good
Edition: 1st Edition
The only major flaw to these two volumes beautifully bound in fine red morocco is a detached cover (still present) to Volume 1 (see photo of detached cover and other photos of joint and hinge of second volume which is still intact). A repair to reattach that one cover to the first volume could be very much worthwhile, because these are copies in clean, bright condition internally and the bindings were first rate workmanship with turn-ins signed in gilt on the leather as being by Stikeman and Co. As is, these volumes still look nice ont he shelf as it is not apparent when shelved that one of the covers is loose. Still, this set of two volumes has been discounted significantly because of that one condition problem. Five raised bands on spine of each volume. Spines elaborately decorated in gilt still bright. The spine leather with age darkening but still attractive. The covers of each volume in in rich red morocco. Triple gilt ruled borders with single rule in gilt outlining a central compartment on each cover. Decorative devices in gilt at each of the four corners of this compartment. Top edges gilt. Date of 1839 in gilt at foot of each spine. Each volume with a lovely E.D. French designed bookplate featuring an oval protrait of Nathaniel Hawthorne (see photos). Original dark brown endpapers retained in the binding. Another uncolored endpaper in volume one has an inscription on it dated 1844 which is a presentation from an Anne L. Longfellow. Unknown if this Anne Longfellow was related to Henry Longfellow. These volumes conform to the specifics of Blanck 12064, Setting B (no priority). This early prose work by Longfellow was inspired in part by his trips to Europe as well as his then-unsuccessful courtship of Frances Appleton, daughter of businessman Nathan Appleton. In the book, the character representing Longfellow himself falls in love with an Englishwoman, Mary Ashburton, who rejects him. In real life, Frances Appleton rejected Longfellow until in 1843 she finally relented and agreed to marry him. Size: Octavo, 213, 226pp. Bookseller Inventory # 2254
