Near Fine in Wraps: shows only the most minute indications of use: just a little of wear to the extremities; mild rubbing to the wrappe covers; smudging to the top edge and some stray red smudges at the bottom edge. The Binding square and secure; text clean. Very close to 'As New'. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo. 639pp. Translated by Terence Kilmartin. Introduction by Peter Quennell. First Edition Thus [1985]; First Printing indicated. This title was first published in French in 1954 and in English in 1968. Trade Paperback. This book is a challenge of sorts, because it's an epic of misogyny by a very gifted writer. I get the same feeling from it that I got from Kingsley Amis' "Stanley and the Women", another woman-hating novel (said by some to be revenge on his ex-wife Elizabeth Jane Howard). In both cases it's a pity that a talented chap had to drink the poison of despicable nonsense. However, Montherlant deserves to be read, as does Amis, because literature isn't about being "politically correct" (or, if you prefer, decent-minded; half the human race or more is lot of folks on which to expend one's bile). Henry Marie Joseph Frédéric Expedite Millon de Montherlant (1895 1972) was a French essayist, novelist, and dramatist. He was elected to the Académie française in 1960. His early successes were works such as Les Célibataires (The Bachelors) in 1934, and the highly acclaimed and deeply vilified anti-feminist tetralogy Les Jeunes Filles (The Young Girls) (19361939), which sold millions of copies and was translated into 13 languages. The novels were praised by writers as diverse as Aragon, Bernanos, and Malraux. Montherlant was well known for his anti-feminist and misogynistic views, as exemplified particularly in The Girls. "The Girls is today infamous as a poisonously misogynistic work." Simone de Beauvoir devoted a whole chapter in The Second Sex to a discussion of his stance. First Edition Thus [1985]; First Printing indicated. Bookseller Inventory # 44228
