Between 1850-1857 he did more to popularize and humanize the Arctic regions than any other explorer before him. At twenty-three he served as medical officer on a diplomatic mission to China that resulted in a two and a half year tour of South America, Africa, Egypt, Greece, Italy, Switzerland, Germany and France. Additionally during the Mexican War he served on a special mission from President Polk and in 1850 he volunteered to on the First Grinnell Expedition in an attempt to find the lost British Expedition led by Sir John Franklin. He returned to the Arctic three years later as commander of the Second Grinnell Expedition where he spent two winters. He charted unknown regions of Greenland where his botanical and geological surveys laid the foundation for the scientific assault on the Arctic regions. Bookseller Inventory # 25075
