Image areas approximately 6 x 4-1/2 inches. matted, overall size 10 x 8 inches. Some images are signed in ink. Edy-Legrand was born in Bourdeaux in 1892, and is known for his large figure and lansdscape paintings, also for his well known posters of French steam boats and magazine illustrations. He is largely responsible for the renaissance of illustration art [in France] and was also a great book illustrator. He illustrated many of the books published by the Limited Editions Club, e.g. Hamlet, Beauty and the Beast, Don Quixote, A Woman's Life, Travels in Arabia Deserta and The Three Musketeers amongst many. Legrand died in 1970 after a long and illustrious career.The eight original illustrations, in ink and watercolour, depict:A weary looking man carrying a heavy burden walking along a river with a bottle in one hand and gesticulating with the other.A nude reclining on a chaise longue framed by heavy drapes, with a portrait bust, fan and gloves on a table in the foreground.A Roman or Greek harbour scene with tall sailing ships at anchor and people on the keys.A close up portrait of two women, old and gnarled with headscarves and bonnets.A view out of a window onto a river crossed by a bridge, in the foreground a table with writing implements, books, chapeau and walking stick.A couple standing in on a balcony looking out over the city, framed by heavy drapes, dressed in rococo costumes, a candle in a candlestick and an open book on a table in the foreground.Two nudes, one reclining the other sitting up scratching her head, amongst plump cushions and swirling drapes.A corpse of a man hanging from a gallows with two crows on the crossbeam, three snarling dogs at his feet, and a ship sailing off in the moonlight. Slight "mat burn" approximately 1/4+ inch from image areas, three with very small break in the paper from the back, almost invisible, one with small tears in margin not affecting image, onne mat with damage upper right (not affecting image) else fine.
