Title: THE BOOK OF ALGOONAH. Being A Concise ...
Publisher: St. Louis: Cyrus F. Newcomb and Company, 1884
Publication Date: 1884
Binding: Brown Blindstamped Cloth
Book Condition: Very Good
Considered an early piece of science fiction, this is a "lost race" novel explaining how the Mound Builders of Midwest America originated in the Middle East in ancient times. Listed in Clareson, Science Fiction in America, 1870s-1930s as 593. Also in Bleiler (1978), p. 6. and in Reginald as 10642. Wright III 598. No author shown on title page but it has been attributed to one J. M. Hanks. Copyright page states this was first published by Cyrus F. Newcomb and Company in 1875, but there are no copies from that year reported. Thus it would seem that the copyright information is false and that there is no previous edition. Printed in St. Louis in 1884. Initials C. F. N. & CO. at bottom of spine. Below the title on spine where the author name would usually appear is the name "Mezzinaroth." Presumably this is who the publisher wanted the public to think was the author. This copy with fading/wear to cloth at top of front cover. Corners bumped. Front hinge intact but back hinge cracked. Patterned endpapers and the front free endpaper has a small slit at the hinge extending down an inch. The endpaper is still holding firmly, however. Contents clean and binding is tight. Lettering on the spine in gilt still bright. Bookseller Inventory # 1885
