David Tinker wrote from the Falklands a remarkable series of letters which are sharply critical of the origins of the conflict and the manner in which it was conducted. He was also a sympathetic and shrewd recorder of day-by-day shipboard life. His letters are full of wry humour: and he was no respecter of pompous persons. He wrote some poems describing experiences and places with a perceptive naturalness of style. These writings are only glimpses of a power of expression which, had he not been killed, could have led eventually to recognition of David Tinker as a new writer of individuality and significance. He did manage to leave to posterity a unique indictment of the Falklands campaign. His accusations will be remembered as long as the war itself is remembered.
