Virtue, to such as Death defy, To heaven points out the road; And spurning the damp earth, on high Aspires to immortality, And seeks repose with God. Discretion too her meed shall bear; With one that could betray The myst'ries of Eleusis, ne'er Would I consent my roof to share, Or tempt the watery way. Horace has always been one of my favourite poets, and I have often toyed with the idea of translating him.
After reading Michie s translation, however, I see that I must dismiss the idea. I do not expect to read a better one. W. H. Auden"
