It is four years since Scottish Independence. Recession has brought mass unemployment which has led to growing civil unrest. On the surface this seems symptomatic of the collapse of the Scottish economy but in fact the discontent is being orchestrated as part of a covert international intrigue.

From the Back Cover:

It is four years since Scotland became independent, and it is struggling with mass employment and growing civil unrest – the Scottish economy is collapsing. The terrible truth is that this violent upheaval is not happening by accident – the discontent is being deliberately orchestrated as part of a covert and vicious international intrigue by an American based multinational corporation, who through a gigantic public private sector partnership aim to make Scotland the base for their economic empire. Aide to the Prime Minister Robert Guthrie and American journalist Heather Anderson are thrown together in their quest to reveal the lie to the nation, before the hard-won Scottish Independence is lost and the new union is destroyed...

Michael Shea, whose novels have been praised for having an uncanny resemblance to fact, has produced a novel as engrossing as it is prophetic. 'State of the Nation' is a vivid and entertaining speculation on the future of Scotland, a future that might be closer than we think.

"Michael Shea, who, as a career diplomat and former press secretary to the Queen, has seen more than his share of political intrigue, has struck on a rich new seam: Scotland ...and Shea extracts the maximum from a nightmare scenario."
THE TIMES

"With 'State of the Nation'Shea hits the topical button."
