No period in British history retains more resonance and mystery today than the 16th century. The terrors and grandeurs of Tudor Britain form an essential part of even the least historically minded readers. NEW WORLDS, LOST WORLDS is a major new history of Tudor Britain, recreating the mentalities of this alluring and dynamic period in British history. With a strong focus on religion, family and royalty and the fate of Ireland, Susan Brigden's book is a startlingly atmospheric tour de force.

Review:
'A thoroughly convincing picture...rich and thoroughly well informed. A distinguished book which will give a lot of pleasure.' -- Diarmaid MacCulloch

'For anyone who wants to encounter these worlds of the Tudor past, there is currently no better guide than Susan Brigden's superb new book.' -- John Adamson, Financial Times, 1st October 2000

'Susan Brigden is a rare creature among Tudor historians writing for a general audience. Her style is spare, her manner cool and impersonal. -- Jane Dunn, Literary Review, October 2000

'Susan Brigden's illuminating and masterly study. [Her] final achievement is her evocation of Ireland... -- Antonia Fraser, Sunday Times, 22nd October 2000

'This is history in the best sense, a doorway flung wide to a whole century of our past, an all-embracing panorama which sweeps the reader along in a prose style which is at once lucid, authoritative and mercifully devoid of jargon...' -- Sir Roy Strong
Synopsis:
No period in British history today retains more resonance and mystery than the 16th century. The leading figures of the time have become almost mythical, and the terrors and grandeurs of Tudor Britain form an essential part of even the least historically minded readers. This book gives the reader a sense of the atmosphere of a great era and if its epochal events. Above all, the author sees the key to the Tudor world as religion - the new world of Protestantism and its battle with the old world of uniform Catholicism. This great religious rent in the fabric of English society underlies the savage violence and turbulence of the period - from Henry VIII's break with Rome to the overwhelming threat of the Spanish Armada. Full attention too is paid to Ireland and the critical role it played in determining English affairs.
