In this brilliant collection of pieces on the question of Palestinian self-determination, Edward Said - the most celebrated, visible, and outspoken Arab writing in America today - looks at the issues behind the Palestinian struggle for statehood. An Arab born in Jerusalem, educated there and in Cairo, and an American who has lived in the United States since the age of fifteen, the product of an American boarding school, Princeton, and Harvard, Said writes from a unique point of view. An internationally renowned literary and cultural critic, he turned his attention to political writing in 1967 after the seizure of the West Bank. In these thirty-eight pieces - essays, book and film reviews, and a personal interview - which have appeared between 1969 and 1994 in a wide range of publications, Said provides the context for understanding the recent autonomy agreement between the PLO and Israel, as well as a critical assessment of United States policy toward the Palestinians. He evaluates the argument for a two-state solution, documents the cultural and historical background to the relationships between the Arab Islamic world and the West, and points up the repercussions of the Gulf War. In all these pieces, Said again and again proves his prescience and deep understanding of an overwhelmingly complex situation. In a candid and very personal introduction, Said eloquently explains how he came to hold his views. A highly effective mediator, who has been present at many of the major Middle East peace negotiations, Said has also been an outspoken critic of Saddam Hussein, the Arab Right Wing, and Islamic fundamentalism. In his introduction, Said discusses how he was, on several occasions, approached behind-the-scenes to try to bring together the United States and Yasir Arafat for substantive meetings and discussions. Robert Hughes has written that Edward Said has always spoken for the "secular, liberal, and human strand in Arab culture whose voices are silenced by Middle

Review:
"The most eloquent and visible voice of the Palestinian struggle in America.... [Said's] combination of flamboyant style and erudite radicalism, honesty and advocacy... makes The Politics of Dispossession necessary and informative for anyone interested in the complexities of the Palestinian question." -- San Francisco Chronicle

"This book should be read by anyone who wants to get beyond the shallow stereotypes that bedevil American thinking on the Middle East." -- Robert Hughes
Book Description:
Said’s collected essays are incontestable proof of his status as the best writer on the Palestinian struggle, offering passionate, and thoroughly knowledgeable critique of this critical issue.

Book Description Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Author of the groundbreaking The Question of Palestine, Edward Said has been America's most outspoken advocate for Palestinian self-determination. As these collected essays amply prove, he is also our most intelligent and bracingly heretical writer on affairs involving not only Palestinians but also the Arab and Muslim worlds and their tortuous relations with the West."Solidly imbued with historical context and geopolitical conjecture.fresh, unpredictable, personal and incorruptible writing."Boston GlobeIn The Politics of Dispossession, Said traces his people's struggle for statehood through twenty-five years of exile, from the PLO's bloody 1970 exile from Jordan through the debacle of the Gulf War and the ambiguous 1994 peace accord with Israel. As frank as he is about his personal involvement in that struggle, Said is equally unsparing in his demolition of Arab icons and American shibboleths. Stylish, impassioned, and informed by a magisterial knowledge of history and literature, The Politics of Dispossession is a masterly synthesis of scholarship and polemic that has the power to redefine the debate over the Middle East. Writing with passion and intelligence, Said retraces the Palestinian Hejira, its disastrous flirtation with Saddam Hussein, and its ambitious peace accord with Israel. Said demolishes Western stereotypes about the Muslim world and Islam's illusions about itself, leaving a masterly synthesis of scholarship and polemic with the power to redefine the debate over the Middle East.
