Synopsis

Winnie-the-Pooh translated into Latin by Alexander Lenard, a Hungarian doctor (and teacher and translator) living in Brazil in the 1950s. Lenard notes, in The Valley of the Latin Bear, that after completing the translation and finding no commercial publisher interested, he applied to the Milne estate for the rights to print an edition himself. They eventually agreed for a fee of three guineas on condition that he could not sell the translation but must instead give away the copies free of charge (including ten copies for the estate). While he had originally intended to print three hundred copies, his budget would only allow for one hundred. The type was set by "a Hungarian typesetter willing to do the job by night on the machines of an Italian daily." When finished he sent copy number one to His Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales, and others to libraries, newspapers, and periodicals. The copy he sent to the Royal Danish Librarian led to a Swedish publishing house printing the second edition, Nalle ille Pu, the following year. Editions were published in England and America the year after. A surprising success, it was the first foreign language book ever to become a New York Times best seller, remaining on the list for twenty weeks and selling 125,000 copies.
