Coming from several religions and nationalities and from all social classes and professions, these women created escape networks, performed intelligence work, became saboteurs and combatants, and wrote and published resistance pamphlets and newspapers from 1940 to 1945. By 1944, more than 177 networks and 41 diverse resistance movements existed. Rossiter equally accounts for the activities of sympathizers--from the housewives who reported Axis port and troop movements to the nuns who gave asylum to escapees.... Revelations in Rossiter's work fill a prominent gap in women's history.
