Victory, don't forget, has come out of my innermost self.

Victory was the last of Conrad's novels to be set in the Malay Archipelago. Sub-titled 'An Island Tale', it tells the story of Axel Heyst who, damaged by his dead father's nihilistic philosophy, has retreated from the world of commerce and colonial exploration to live alone on the island of Samburan. But Heyst's solitary existence ends when he rescues an English girl from her rapacious patron and takes her off to his retreat. She in turn recalls him to love and life, until the world breaks in on them once more with tragic consequences. In this love story Conrad created two of his psychologically most complex and compelling characters in a narrative of great erotic power.

This new edition uses the English first edition text and has a new chronology and bibliography.

Review:
I am glad that I am alive, if, for no other reason, because of the joy of reading this book. Jack London"
From the Back Cover:

Set among the islands of the Malay Archipelago, 'Victory' is the story of Axel Heyst, a 'utopist' who shuns human society in favour of a solitary existence on the island of Samburan. On a rare trip away from his island solitude, Heyst visits Schomberg's hotel in Sourabaya where he encounters an English girl who is part of a travelling ladies' orchestra. He rescues her from a wretched existence and takes her back to Samburan. Schomberg, who had designs on the girl, is furious, and later he exacts his revenge by directing three villains to Samburan in pursuit of the fortune that Heyst is rumoured to have there. Their arrival in Heyst's private paradise triggers a train of events which quickly reach a violent conclusion.
