First published in 1966 ORANGES is the book that established McPhee as the most charming and strange of American essayists. In a remarkably small number of words, ORANGES gives both a history of humanity's love for the fruit and a wonderful pictureof Florida - a state transformed from dreary barrenness to one, vast orange grove by the world's insatiable demand for orange juice.

Review:
"Fascinating. A sterling example of what a fresh point of view, a clear style, a sense of humor and diligent investigation can do to reveal the inherent interest in something as taken-for-granted as your morning orange juice." --Edmund Fuller, "The Wall Street Journal "
"It is a delicious book, in a word, and more absorbing than many a novel." --Roderick Cook, "Harper's"
