This book provides an exposition on some of the latest eigenvalue solution techniques for large order eigenvalue problems arising in the dynamic modelling of structures by finite element analysis. The main algorithms covered are the Lanczos and Subspace Iteration methods plus a unified account on dynamic substructuring procedures. In particular extensive coverage of Kron's method is given. throughout the book emphasis is placed on obtaining exact solutions and no attempt is made to introduce any approximations in the solution processes. Multiplication counts are given for all the major operations, therey giving an indicator of the numerical efficiency. The characteristics of each procedure are illustrated with examples, giving the reader an appreciation of the main computational principles. While it is assumed that the reader is familiar with the rudiments of matrix algebra, mathematical detail in the formulations is given where necessary and the text is sufficiently self-contained to enable independent research.
