Volume 1 of this complete update of the "Specificaton for Highway Works" lays down detailed specification requirements for use in public purchasing contracts. It contains 26 Series and 7 Lettered Appendices which cover standards and specifications which are now common to the four UK countries. Consistent with EC legislation requiring freedom from barriers to trade, changes to the original "Specification for Highway Works" will ensure freedom of use of products and materials from other EC countries. A number of technical improvements to the Specification aim to give better value for money from road construction and maintenance; the format of the updated Manual makes information easier to find, and easier to manage.
