The report's findings show that across all key stages, standards of achievement in English are satisfactory or better in four fifths of schools. Standards are good or very good in almost 35%. Pupils are generally gaining understanding, knowledge and skills in all attainment targets though standards in writing are lower than those in reading, speaking and listening. Standards are higher at Key Stage 1, Key Stage 4 and post-16 than in the intermediate stages.
