Commonly thought to be something of a recluse L S Lowry revelled in company, although he was insistent to almost a churlish degree on his right to choose it. Because his best known work is closely associated with scenes of industrial deprivation he was often assumed to be a man of socialist inclinations but he voted Conservative and had considerable admiration for Edward Heath. Truthfulness was not high on his list of priorities. He maintained he had never been anything but a painter when he worked a nine-to-five job (first as a rent collector and later in a managerial position) until he retired.

Book Description Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. 1st Edition. Dustwrapper, pp.258. Illustrated. The author was joint owner of the Stone Gallery in Newcastle, which actively promoted Lowry`s work in his later years, and spent a great deal of time with him. This biography reveals a complicated and sometimes difficult character. Dustwrapper sound and clean but the spine is rather sunned leaving only the title legible. No sign on the outside but the inside of the wrapper spine is rather dampstained at the head ; there is light staining to the inside foot of the spine which just faintly shows on the outside. Binding, endpapers and contents unaffected. Previous owners bookplate to front endpaper. VG in fair to good dustwrapper. Seller Inventory # 009674
