In Book Four: Faith, Reason, and Power in the Early Modern World, readers are exposed to the cornerstones of the early modern world, from the age of the Baroque to the art, music, and culture of the eighteenth century. As in previous volumes, the author presents lively discussion accompanied by literary excerpts and examples to illuminate a variety of topics, including Catholicism's global reach, the birth of modern philosophy, the political theories of Hobbes and Locke, the Enlightenment, and the music of Hayden and Mozart, to name a few.

From the Publisher:
Audio CDs: The text is supported by audio recordings on compact disc.
"The whole wide world meets the world wide web": Fiero's long commitment to a global approach in humanities reaches full flower with this edition as the Online Learning Center offers the opportunity to incorporate the widest variety of readings, maps, timelines, and historical contexts available.
"The Humanistic Tradition is quite simply the finest book of its type. Fiero manages to integrate the political, cultural, and social history of the world into one coherent and fascinating whole. It is a masterpiece of scholarship . . . balanced, interesting, easy to read, and consummately beautiful. Our professors praise its accuracy and scope and our students unanimously say it is their favorite textbook." - Sonia Sorrell, Pepperdine University
Global: In all six books connections are drawn between Western culture and the cultures of Africa, China, Japan, and India. This coverage is integrated within each book - for example, Book 4, Chapter 21, discusses the aristocratic styles of 17th-century France, China, and India. This serves to give students an appreciation of the ways in which the world's societies mirror, interact with, and inspire each other.
Flexible: Given the diversity of approaches to Humanities courses, The Humanistic Tradition has been designed to easily integrate with any course format, duration, or style of teaching. The six different stand-alone books let professors tailor the text to either a half- or full-year course. Additionally, individual books can serve as excellent supplements to core texts in literature, art, philosophy, and history.
Well Illustrated: Over 600 four-color illustrations fill the pages of The Humanistic Tradition.
Primary Sources: From Homer to Bob Marley, from The Egyptian Book of the Dead to Waiting for Godot, over 150 literary sources are included in the text - the permissions are cleared, no copies are needed - and each selection appears in the books within its artistic and historical context. Students are provided an opportunity to experience the literature of each period for themselves.
Chronological Organization; Topical Focus:
Beginning with the earliest evidence of human culture, The Humanistic Tradition proceeds into the present, describing the evolution of artistic expression. Throughout the chronological progression, the text is organized around clearly defined ideas and themes such as "Absolute Power and the Aristocratic Style" (Book 4, Chapter 21), "The Romantic Hero" (Book 5, Chapter 28) or "The Quest for Meaning" (Book 6, Chapter 35). This topical focus offers students a framework for understanding humanity's creative legacy as a continuum rather than as a series of isolated events.
About the Author:
