To this end, Philip Maffetone puts a great deal of emphasis on providing a formal problem analysis questionnaire which the reader is asked to complete. If, on completion, the reader then studies the key provided, he or she will be able to identify problem areas, which could be stress, dietry problems or aerobic deficiency.
Maffetone adds a word of caution, however, urging the reader throughout the book not to "overdo his/her selected exercise". Aware that an exercise may prove therapeutic for one reader while exacerbating the problems of another, he urges and provides the support for regular self-monitoring.
The Maffetone Method follows a simple, logical, easy-to-read sequence that corresponds to the original fault-finding questionnaire. Medical jargon is largely avoided, but where necessary, Maffetone takes pains to explain difficult terminology in layman's terms.
Leaving nothing to chance in the exercise programme, Maffetone differentiates between the needs of the casual exerciser and those of the serious athlete, down to the correct and well-fitting footwear and the necessity of a good, well balanced diet.
