As I traveled around the world speaking and I experienced more and more different industries, associations, and organizations in both the public and the private sectors, I came to the conclusion that the difference between an ordinary workplace and an extraordinary workplace was the element of spirit--the spirit of caring, creativity, and fun. I began to collect ideas of things different individuals and organizations were doing in their workplaces to engender this spirit of joy, and I also began to read everything I could find on the topic.
What I discovered was that there were lots of "theoretical" writings out there about spirit in the workplace but I could find no practical ones, ones that contained "how-to" ideas that anyone could use to make their workplace a better place to be. So I began to organize the ideas I had collected and found that they fell into the acronym CARE. C = Creative Communication; A = Atmosphere and Appreciation for All; R = Respect and Reason for Being; and E = Empathy and Enthusiasm. This, then, became the format for the book with one of the elements as the basis for each chapter.
I have now been speaking on this topic for over 4 years, and in that short time, I have been asked to speak on four continents and in 46 states. I know without a doubt that the ideas in this book can make a big difference in any organization; however, most of them start with single individuals. You may want to read the story of "Johnny, the grocery bagger" in the chapter on "Reason for Being." It has been excerpted in "Chicken Soup for the Soul 3", in "Everyone's a Coach", in "Heart at Work" and tells the true story of a young man with Down's Syndrome who completely turned around the atmosphere in a large supermarket. That is the spirit of this book--that no matter what your job is, no matter what your boss or co-workers are doing, no matter how much change is going on around you, you have powerful opportunities every single day in every interaction you have to make a difference. And the book will give you hundreds of ideas to help that happen. My wish is that you will find new hope for your workplace from the real life ideas and stories in the book. I send you my own joy in being able to affirm all the individuals and organizations who are making a wonderful, positive difference in our world!
