Reseña del editor:
The Complete Idiot's GuideA (R) to Hockey will cover the complete history of hockey, including: in the beginning-bandy and shinny are the precursors to what would become hockey; full-blown hockey invented in...Dartmouth, N.S.; How hockey hit the lower forty-eight; the first Winter Olympics; the birth of the NHL; the 70's-goons to the left, goons to the right-hockey's darkest days; the rise of Lemieux, Gretzky, Messier, and the modern hockey hero; hockey comes out from behind the Iron Curtain; and inroads women and minorities have made into the sport. The authors have also included four Top 10 lists in the back of the book, including players, teas, moments, and influential people in hockey history.
Biografía del autor:
Malcolm Kelly was born in England and raised in Toronto. As an athlete he ran sprints in track, played baseball, football, and water polo, and eventually went into coaching and managing young people at the AAA minor baseball level, helping to found the North Toronto Baseball Association. After graduating from the Univer-sity of Toronto in 1981, he first worked professionally for Thomson Newspapers in Midland, Ontario, then spent two years in professional basketball public relations. For 12 years, he held many different jobs at the Town Crier, Canada's largest community monthly newspaper chain, before spending a season covering the Toronto Blue Jays for Canadian Press and two years doing the Toronto Raptors for CP and the National Post. He has also covered the Toronto Maple Leafs and many individual events such as auto racing, tennis, and basketball for the Ottawa Citizen. Currently, he works for the Toronto Weekend section of the National Post. Mr. Kelly lives in Toronto with his wife, Barbara, son, Patrick, and their dachshund, Auggie. Mark Askin was born and raised in Toronto. The single constant in his life since day one was his fanatical love of hockey, fostered by a pair of season tickets at Maple Leaf Gardens for the Toronto Maple Leafs. The tickets were used by Mark and his father, Harold, beginning in 1963. Each game was a culmination of a week-long dream, and the evening would end with a quiet ride home with dad discussing the game from top to bottom. After graduating from East York Collegiate in 1977, Mr. Askin immediately began work at CKFH Radio (Foster Hewitt's station), producing Canada's first nightly sports talk show, Talking of Sports. In 1981, he moved to Global Television to produce Sportsline, Canada's first nightly 30-minute sports magazine show. In 1987 he was hired by Molstar Communications and since has produced over 2,000 hockey games including four Stanley Cup Finals for Hockey Night in Canada, 300 playoff games, the 1996 World Cup of Hockey, and the world feed at the 1998 Olympic hockey tournament in Nagano. He has also won a Gemini Award for his production work. Mr. Askin lives in Toronto with his wife, Avis, and their son, Christopher. He currently produces all Toronto Maple Leaf midweek television broadcasts.
